Studying abroad is definitely a milestone in the lives of many students. Even for a short stint abroad like an exchange programme, many students would agree that the experience was life-changing and something they would remember for a lifetime.
1. Independence
Studying abroad teaches you to be independent. Without the physical presence of family and close friends, you need to step out of your comfort zone and make new friends. Being alone in a foreign land gives you the opportunity to challenge yourself and to depend on yourself, especially when you are unfamiliar with the surroundings. You will gain valuable skills like being able to rely on yourself emotionally and physically.
2. Change
Change is the only constant in life, and it cannot be more true for a student studying abroad. When you are studying abroad, you may face many challenges when it comes to settling in, getting around the city and even where to get your daily necessities from. You may be asked to move out from your apartment, or even to pay a fine for something that seemed perfectly normal!
3. Culture
Studying abroad gives you the chance to live in a country which has a different culture from you. You will gain sensitivity to cultural norms and insight into the way of life.
4. Freedom
One of the things that students relish the most would be freedom. In a foreign land without your family, there is much autonomy to do as you like. You will enjoy the freedom that comes with living alone or with friends. You can travel to neighbouring countries, throw fun parties and live without the constant supervision from parents.
5. Friendship
You will learn to cherish the friends around you more. You will gain close-knit friends that cannot be replaced by family. The type of relationships you make will be special, as you have a shared experience with these people.
